My Handicap Smart Car Adventures

I have not pumped gas in over 20 years....
so when I pumped my own gas....
it was a big deal for me.

Hubs had forgotten to put gas in my Smart car....I had to go to town unexpectedly while he was at work.....thinking, oh I can make it with this much gas but...

when the gas gauge counted down and was flashing .00 gallons...I had to pull into a self serve gas station since I don't know of any full service stations anymore...
(I knew I could ask someone to pump it for me but I have that independence thing).

After parking at a pump...I crawled over to the passenger seat since the car is so small....then I  got out that side of the car....fortunately I could stand wobbly while holding onto the door...figured out how to open the new gas nozzle stuff.....filled it up rather efficiently!

then climbed back in the passenger door...scooted crawled drug my legs over to the drivers side of the car....and drove home like always...using hand-controls
but this time I had a full tank of gas that I had pumped!

I was so happy when I was able to figure out a way to pump my own gas (that independence thing again)...
and thankfully...
I have a Hubs that will continue to pump it for me!
but it is good to know that I can do it by myself...
if I need to.

Whooo Hoooo!! That is so GREAT!! I don't know if I could figure out how to pump my own gas, My Hubs always does it for me. I guess you and I are SPOILED ... just a little.

That is a great accomplishment! Good for you. It is important for self esteem to stay independent, even if others often do things for us.

HI
great picture and share about independence. There is a kids book titled, "I Can Do It Myself" give it a look-see, you will smile.
Love Gail

A lesson to us all - we can often do so much more than we imagine, when faced with an obstacle! Good for you - you handled it so well!

Love your car, I drive a Smart here in Ireland!

Has your Smart been modified to assist you?

We have not modified the car much....just added the hand-controls on the inside....and, the wheelchair carrier onto the rear....which has a 200 pound weight limit

you go girl!!! fantastic... and you are right, now you know you can if you have to. I can pump my own with not problem but Bob takes it and fills it up for me because during the cold weather, everything i touch shocks me and makes sparks, door knobs, anything on a car, i am afraid the spark will blow up the gas fumes... I am happy for you hubby fills it and more than happy you can do it to

That must be quite an adventure for you. I hate pumping gas, so normally hubby had it filled before I drive. He did made me pump once in case of emergency like yours. I know how it feels great to be independent but at times I prefer to be dependent too. Hahahah have a great weekend to you.

Independence is a great thing - very cool

A few months ago we were at a full service gas station & had to explain to my son what was going on - he could't understand why the men were doing everything :)

Yes its good to do things by yourself. You car is so tiny and cute. You wouldn't need to buy petrol very often and thats also great for economy.

Bravo to you!!! I know you felt so good and bursting with pride. With the Lord with us there is noting we cant do.

I have not pumped gas in Many years as I had not been driving because of my leg situation. SO I got my pumping moment not long ago so I can imagine how you felt. I was so excited to accomplish task that is so easy for so many to to do. The pumps sure have changed, to much reading and pushing buttons for my taste. But like you, I know I can do it if I have too.

Stay warm, and lets pray we do not get frozen in.

Good for you! I don't have to pump it often, thanks to my hubs, but your independence inspires me. There are things in life I need to tackle just so I know I can do it if I need to.

YEAH, you did it, lady. Not easy, though manageable. Awesome!

I can almost picture you climbing over the seats to get out to pump the gas. You are an amazing woman!!
