James H. Patterson Sacrifice for Country

I am reposting this about my family member who gave all....

On this Memorial Day weekend.....I want to recognize my grandmothers brother who gave his life for our country in World War I.

James Harvey Patterson

my aunt Sue remembers her mom saying....... Harve left in tears saying "I will never be back" as he walked away on that old country dirt road (not on a volunteer basis like we have now).

He was killed on October 4, 1918 just weeks before the war ended and was buried in Flanders Field. He did not make it back to American soil.....of course that always bothered my grandmother.

I am thankful to all who made that supreme sacrifice on this Memorial Day weekend!

Gosh I hate that young men die, and you Uncle voiced what he knew, he would never be back. Much love sent your way. I lived in Rogersville TN for 3 years and during that time my hubby took me to see Crossville. I wanted to see when the soldier Alvin York came from. All our soldiers are special. I salute, my U.S. Marine hubby injured and never the same. My father and uncle in WW2 and grandfather in WW1.. In Australia we have a stature of a soldier remembrance in every town. The day we celebrate is called ANZAC Day and it begins with a dawn service, then another at 10am, with free meals for all vets and marches. Every thing all over the country stops that day. No shops open and we all say,
" They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
LEST WE FORGET." This is also spoken out every night at 6pm in the Returned Soldiers Club.

It's sad. They are gone but not forgotten
