it seems we are the first to try to make a Smart Car Handicap Accessible!
I only need to walk a few steps to load and unload the chair.
Hubs drove at70 55mph hitting bumps and around curves! The chair hangs onto the car securely since he used 3 seat belts to secure the chair to the carrier.
Hubs has tweaked car to raise it up since this pic by adding a 2 inch lift kit to support the weight of the chair carrier.
The car has to have a Class I trailer hitch. It has a 200 pound tongue weight....so it required a light weight wheelchair carrier and scooter.
I am planning to get hand controls next week....When I drive it by myself, I will blog about it!
original date 9/2/11 We have had the car carrying a chair for 2 years now.....we have driven it on all types of roads, interstates, mountain, dirt, etc....I still Love this car

That car is toooooo cute! I have not seen one of those before.
ReplyDeleteNow that is one awesome set up on the back...Will you have a cover made for when it rains so your chair does not get wet?
When it rains....waiting... still waiting.
i know you are excited beyond belief. the car is soooooo cute and with the scooter it makes me smile. i am so happy for you now you will be free as a bird.
ReplyDeleteOkay, this is so exciting! Where are you going to drive yourself first?!
ReplyDeleteThat's great you're getting your car ready to be able to drive on your own.
ReplyDeleteThat's great!
ReplyDeleteI know you will get lots of looks whenever you are out driving!! This is so cool, what an achievement! I have really never seen anything like it, most people here carry the wheelchairs in vans. It is all really cute, too. I know you can't wait for the hand controls!
ReplyDeleteA red , cute, feminine car! How exciting!
ReplyDeleteI hope you greatly enjoy driving this little gem.
Wow--that sweet hubby of yours is making your new car just PERFECT for you... That is SUPER. Hope you enjoy the Smart Car... We have a few around here--and they are just so cute!!!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Betsy
You have one fantastic Hubs! And now a fantastic car!
ReplyDeleteJust wonderful to have independence just round the corner.
ReplyDeleteThis is incredible! I'm sending this to my son. He's all about "the green". =)
ReplyDeleteLove it.
Good Luck on getting your car all fixed up!
ReplyDeleteI'm lovin' that car! Reminds me of a sweet red candy apple...or should I say your new sweet ride :) Enjoy the freedom! Zoom Zoom!
ReplyDeleteThis is too cute for words! It almost looks like the scooter apparatus weighs more than the car itself! BTW - If you've never used hand controls before you'll find them very intuitive. Easy-Peasy. The hardest part of your journeys will be those few steps from the driver's seat to the lift, and the bending down and unhooking of the scooter.
ReplyDeleteHave FUN!!!
this project is really shaping up. it's not easy to do something different and follow through. congratulations, and i eager to hear of the next step.
ReplyDeleteOh, wow! How exciting for you! No...stupendous! Awesome!! Enjoy your freedom!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh. I love it. What about rain?
ReplyDeleteI have hand controls on my car and once you are used to them, they are no problem at all. Glad you will be able to get out and about on your own!
ReplyDeleteIts too good to heart that u get to movie around carrying the wheelchair along with u! Happy for you Kim, take care and enjoy the rides :)
ReplyDeleteThat is the cutest little car I've ever seen! Have a great weekend!
